Detroit Metro Times: Townsend Hotel’s Rugby Grille in Birmingham names new executive chef.
The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, which houses the award-winning fine-dining Rugby Grille, has signed on a new executive chef, Todd Sabo.
Sabo is a native of Dearborn, but he’s spent a long time away from metro Detroit, cooking at a Ritz Carlton in Dallas, where he worked for more than eight years in various roles, including excutive sous chef. At the Townsend, he will be charged with handling the hotel’s culinary operations, the Rugby Grille’s menu, as well as menus for the Afternoon Tea, Townsend Bakery, and the Corner bar.
Sabo brings with him a global perspective, having traveled extensively in Mexico and South America, and studied English Lit and Russian language at the University of Michigan.

Just Two Percent of More than 30,000 AAA-Approved Restaurants Receive this Rating
BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Feb. 15,2016 – The Rugby Grille, The Townsend Hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, has again received the coveted AAA Four Diamond designation, and is one of only five Michigan restaurants to earn this honor. The Rugby Grille has maintained this prestigious rating consecutively since 2001.
According to AAA, restaurants at this level offer a distinctive fine-dining experience and attentive service. Menu offerings are typically distinguished by highly creative chefs using top-quality ingredients.
The Rugby Grille is part of a select group of establishments within North America. Currently, just 683 restaurants throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean hold the AAA Four Diamond Rating.

Church hopes to fill hearts, tummies at annual hunger event

BIRMINGHAM — There’s nothing like a warm bowl of soup to cozy up a chilly Birmingham night.
On Wednesday, Feb. 10, First United Methodist Church of Birmingham will host its annual Empty Bowls event. Around 40 volunteers will dish out tasty soups from some of the area’s favorite chefs to benefit those who have to go without.
“This is an annual event for our Hunger Committee, which helps various local organizations that (work to solve) hunger,” said committee member Chris Stout. “It’s on Ash Wednesday, and the church holds short services every half-hour, so we usually get a lot of people in.”
This year, nearly two dozen local restaurants have offered to prepare soup and bread for the event, including Sweet Lorraine’s, Mad Hatter Bistro, Red Coat Tavern, Streetside Seafood and more.

DBusiness: The Townsend Hotel Names New Managers
The Townsend Hotel, a luxury hotel in Birmingham, has added three new managers to its operating team. They are: Daniel Colangelo as food and beverage manager, Ana-Lisa Cervantez as banquet manager, and Kori Reeves as assistant front office manager.
Colangelo, who has more than 10-year working in restaurants, is responsible for the daily operations of the Rugby Grille, The Townsend’s award-winning fine dining restaurant. Previously, Colangelo served as operations manager at Eddie Merlot’s in Bloomfield Hills. Before that, he worked as assistant general manager of Buca Di Beppo in Utica, and was assistant manager at Morton’s The Steakhouse in Southfield. He is a member of the National Restaurant Association.
Colangelo, of Waterford, earned dual associate degrees from Oakland Community College in liberal arts and criminal justice.
